10th U.S. CORAL REEF TASK FORCE MEETING IN CNMI AND GUAM

NOAA and the U.S. Department of Commerce announce the 10th U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Meeting in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on October 3, 2003, and in Guam on October 6, 2003. Through the coordinated efforts of its members, the Coral Reef Task Force has helped lead U.S. efforts to address the coral reef crisis and sustainably manage the nation’s valuable coral reef ecosystems.

INAUGURAL NOAA MCARTHUR II RESEARCH CRUISE INVESTIGATES NEARSHORE OCEAN CONDITIONS, SEDIMENT CHEMISTRY, INVERTEBRATE BIODIVERSITY, AND FISH COMMUNITIES ALONG THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST CONTINENTAL SHELF

The NOAA approach to estuary research produces information that increases the nation’s understanding of these complex coastal systems and improves its ability to protect and restore habitats within them. For example, work conducted this summer onboard the newly commissioned NOAA Ship MCARTHUR II investigated nearshore ocean conditions, sediment chemistry, invertebrate biodiversity and fish communities along the Pacific Northwest continental shelf.

PERSPECTIVES ON THE COASTAL NONPOINT PROGRAM

Nonpoint source pollution — polluted runoff entering waterways from diffuse land-based activities — is the leading cause of water quality degradation to coastal waters. Fortunately, the Coastal Nonpoint Program, jointly administered by NOAA and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has established a set of economically achievable management measures for states to use in controlling polluted runoff.

PACIFIC MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY - THIRTY YEARS OF OBSERVING THE OCEAN

The NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle, Wash., is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Its major accomplishments during this time include work on the National Tsunami Mitigation Program, Underwater Volcanoes and Vents, Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations Program, Pacific Tropical Atmosphere Ocean Array and Underwater Acoustical Monitoring.
