THE CONTRIBUTION OF NOAA BUOYS TO A GLOBAL OCEAN OBSERVING SYSTEM: BENEFITS TO CLIMATE PREDICTION AND RESEARCH

NOAA's primary contribution to a global ocean observing system includes both: improving existing ocean observing systems—e.g., TAO/TRITION array, the major "oceanic" component of NOAA's El Niño/Southern Oscillation Observing System—and implementing new ocean observing systems. The network enables NOAA scientists to forecast seasonal and interannual—El Niño/La Niña—climate phenomena and other climate variations.
