DUST STORMS, SAND STORMS AND RELATED NOAA ACTIVITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST

The most notable natural hazards in Iraq are dust and sand storms, which are most prevalent in the spring and summer. But what does this have to do with NOAA? Actually, quite a bit. The NOAA Air Resources Laboratory conducts research on large scale dust and sand storms in the Middle East, and NOAA Satellites and Information uses it’s polar-orbiting satellites to detect and track these storms in Iraq and surrounding regions.

NOAA CLIMATE SUMMARIES FOR THE MIDDLE EAST AND IRAQ

Weather data for Iraq and surrounding countries have been collected over the years by the Federal Climate Complex, which includes the NOAA National Climatic Data Center, the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy, collocated in Asheville, N.C. These data allow the public (and war planners) to get some perspective on the weather conditions that troops and their commanders are likely to encounter as they confront Iraqi forces in the Arabian Desert.

RECOVERING ENDANGERED SALMON THROUGHOUT THE WEST

Salmon have been at the center of the West Coast lifestyle for centuries. Over the last decade, however, many salmon populations have been severely depleted. In support of the NOAA Fisheries mission to promote the recovery of protected species, NOAA scientists are leading the efforts to rebuild at-risk populations of Pacific salmon by providing scientific information to managers charged with rebuilding depleted stocks.

NOAA NATIONAL SEVERE STORMS LABORATORY INVESTIGATES ALL ASPECTS OF SEVERE AND HAZARDOUS WEATHER

The NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory investigates all aspects of severe and hazardous weather. As a part of NOAA Research, it is the only federally-supported laboratory focused on severe weather. NSSL was established in 1964 and has additional staff in Colorado, Nevada, Washington and Wisconsin.

ECONOMIC STATISTICS FOR NOAA

NOAA completed the first revision to "Economic Statistics for NOAA," a compendium of economic statistics relevant to NOAA’s mission and programs. It is intended to serve as a common reference to the economic impacts and benefits of NOAA programs and provide a consistent set of economic statistics for NOAA management and staff when preparing for Congressional visits and testimony, budget preparation, speeches and other external events.
